The truth of sock sorting

How much have your life have you spent sorting out socks into pairs? Hands up – probably hours…, going into days. Eek! What a tedious, complete waste of time.

It’s boring. So I stopped doing it. How? I have several different solutions for you:

Sock Solution 1

This is what I did.

I got rid of all of the socks that we had. And replaced them all with the same socks of the same color (black). This means all the socks match. No time sorting required.

But I hear you say, each member of my family has different sock sizes. It will make it more difficult to sort socks by size if they are the same color.

I’m lucky in one way because 3 of us can wear socks that are the same size. And the youngest of the family has a different size which makes it very obvious. However, if this isn’t the case for your household, the solution is to buy a different colour for each family member with a different sock size.

Popular sock colours are black, dark grey, medium grey and dark blue.

Sock Solution 2

Give each member of the family a washable bag in which they should put their dirty socks. Then just throw the whole bag in the washing machine. Then the socks won’t get mixed up in the wash.

Throw the sock bag into the tumble dryer and then give it to each family member when washed and dried.

I do this as well. It keeps all the socks together when you wash them, so you don’t have to sort them from the rest of the laundry.

You can also do this with pants and other small items of laundry. It keeps the small items separate and less sorting is required.

Sock Solution 3

This sock dock (featured above) is another ingenious sock storage solution. Put the socks in pairs using the sock dock before you put them in the washing machine. When the socks have been laundered you just hang them in each person’s wardrobe ready to wear.

Sock Solution 4

Train each family member to put a safety pin in between each pair of socks when they take them off at the end of the day. This keeps them together in the laundry basket. No more sorting and matching socks!
